Sassenach

It may have taken me a month, but I finally finished Outlander.

The year is 1945, and Claire Randall is enjoying a second honeymoon with her husband, Frank. They were apart for six years during World War II because she was a combat nurse. But as she steps through a standing stone in the British Isles, she is transported back in time to the year 1743, in a war-torn Scotland with Highland clans. She is a Sassenach, or outlander. While there, she meets Jamie, a tall, orange, handsome warrior.

It took me a really long time to get into this book. I don’t exactly know why. But once I did, I couldn’t let go. All the details did seem a bit tedious, but they made the story that much more vivid. Go check it out.

The First Supersoldier

It’s so good to be back stateside! I’ll tell you all about my trip later. En route from Heathrow to home, I wanted to watch Divergent so I could give it a proper review, but I didn’t see it on the list. :(. But I did see Captain America: The First Avenger.

The movie tells the story of a man named Steve Rogers. Since he was a kid, all he has wanted to do is serve his country in the army. All his efforts to enlist have been stopped dead in their tracks by his long list of medical problems: you name it, he probably has it. So when a scientist with the military offers him a chance to change for the better, he jumps at it.

I thought the movie was really well done. It took a while to get to the climax, but it was worth it. Just the right balance of action and a personal story. And a surprise appearance by Dominic Cooper. He was in the movie, but I didn’t recognize him. If anything, watch it for Chris Evans. He’s easy on the eyes. Really easy. 😉

The Winter Soldier

On my flight to Paris, I was actually able to watch a movie for free. Awesome, right? After browsing through the selection of movies, I finally settled on Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Basically, Captain America has to hunt down and fight a guy called the Winter Soldier. But he’s so elusive that no one can find him, and most people think he’s a myth. But it gets more complicated than that when the Nick Fury, one of the higher-ups in S.H.I.E.L.D., is shot.

I think someone forgot to take their foot off the accelerator. But that’s okay because I like lots of action and adventure in my movies. Blowing stuff up is always good too. And, like any good movie, it had its share of plot twists.

It’s not in theaters anymore, but if you get the chance to watch it, I highly recommend it.

Last Night’s Extreme Weightloss

Last night’s episode of EWL featured Brandi, a make-up artist and former beauty queen. So to surprise her, Chris Powell dressed up as a photographer and showed up at the beauty pageant she was working. So I tweeted him and this is what he said.

Harry Potter Will Never Die

Well, ABC Family’s Potterhead Weekend is over. But Harry Potter’s story will never die. We still have Pottermore and the theme park. And we have the next generation. We can reread the books and watch the movies with them. And they will, in turn, impact future generations. Harry Potter is not just a fad. J.K. Rowling created a world with infinite depth.

Harry Potter will never die as long as those who remain are loyal to him.

Wizards and School

You know, I’ve always wondered what witches and wizards do until they turn 11. Do they go to Muggle School or something?

AC: From Air Conditioning to Alice Cullen (Prologue)

The year was 1928. It was just another ordinary day for the town of Biloxi, Mississippi. The sun shined down brightly on Mary Alice Brandon and her sister, Cynthia, as they walked home from school. Fair skinned as she was, it didn’t take long for Mary to sweat. She was used to that. But the day’s heat was so intense that she began to feel faint.

New Respect for Ginny

I’m pretty sure Ginny Potter just hexed Rita Skeeter. That’s okay though, I always hated her guts.
