The Perfect Expression

I know I took the path that you would never want for me, I know I let you down, didn’t I?  So many sleepless nights when you were waiting up on me, well I’m just a slave unto the night.  Now remember when I told you that’s the last you’ll see of me, remember when I broke you down to tears.  I know I took the path that you would never want for me, I gave you hell through all the years.  So I, I bet my life, I bet my life, I bet my life on you.  I, I bet my life, I bet my life, I bet my life on you.  I’ve been around the world and never in my wildest dreams would I come running home to you.  I’ve told a million lies but now I tell a single truth, there’s you in everything I do. Don’t tell that I’m wrong, I’ve walked down that road before and left you on your own.  And please believe them when they say that it’s left for yesterday and all the records that I’ve played.  Please forgive me for all I’ve done.  So I, I bet my life, I bet my life, I bet my life on you.  I, I bet my life, I bet my life, I bet my life on you.  So I, I bet my life, I bet my life, I bet my life on you.

“I Bet My Life” by Imagine Dragons is the perfect description of my relationship with my mother.  She’s been through so much in her life, and that headache she’s had for the past 20 years?  Yep, that’s me.  In the past, she’d always been there for me, so now I fall into the trap of taking her for granted.  I’m glad she hasn’t kicked me out yet.  Sometimes, I’m so focused on myself and my own issues that I don’t even think about her.  It’s one of my biggest faults.  What neither of us realize is that I have a lot of respect for her – I don’t show it, so she doesn’t get to see it.  But when I take the time to look back at how far I’ve come, I know I wouldn’t be anywhere close to where I am today with out her.

Mom, I love you.  You need to know that.  I hope you do.
