Considering the events of the past week, I can’t help but think: what are the history books of the future going to look like? Are we going to bring up the events of recent shootings over and over again? Those would be some really dark textbooks. We shouldn’t be defined by all the shootings over the years, but if shootings keep happening, it might be inevitable. If we don’t want to be defined by such horror, it can’t keep happening. It needs to stop.
If we keep doing this to ourselves, we’ll be sitting ducks for terrorists. We don’t need another 9/11. One was bad enough. If we continue to be as divided as we are right now, America will not survive. If we stand for nothing, we will fall for anything. I’m no expert, but we need better mental health support, better background checks, stricter gun laws – let’s face it, no one needs a military strength gun of they’re not in the military. I just think these are some things that might help.
We also need to stop making blanket statements blaming ethnicity and religion. Because we allow these things to keep happening, we are all part of the problem. Police officers are also part of the problem. Don’t get me wrong, I have friends that are police officers and I respect what they do. The problem lies in those officers who don’t seem to know what they are doing. They think force is the only way to resolve things. Unfortunately, said force often leads to someone’s death.
This problem does not start or end with one group of people. If we want to see things change, we need to work together.
