Today, I went to see Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in concert with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk, Virginia.
And I was immediately reminded why I hate people. Before the show started, they were showing extras about the music in the movies and its importance. But I could hardly hear any of it. Because not only were people trying to find their seats, but they were talking to other people sitting near them. I was surprised at how much noise they made. And I was disappointed. One would think that because most members of the audience are Potterheads – people who like Harry Potter – they would be interested in aspects of how the movie was made. Apparently not.
However, once the movie started, it was amazing. The audience was encouraged to react to the movie, which made it fun. And I was able to pick up on some of the differences between the book and the movie, having recently reread the book. It was kind of hard to concentrate though, because I wanted to watch the orchestra as they were playing, but then I would have missed the movie. One thing I found interesting was that the movie had English subtitles. But the dialogue was a bit hard to hear over the orchestra, so I guess that makes sense.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in concert is coming in May of next year. I can’t wait.
