On Katy Perry

I’ve written about Rachel Platten. I’ve written about Shakira. But I haven’t written about Katy Perry. Yet.

Before Rachel came along, there was Katy. She’s been around for awhile, and I’ve always liked her music, but I let myself stray a bit. Probably because nothing had hit me like a ton of bricks before Rachel’s performance of “Stand by You” at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.

However, Katy Perry is exactly the person I didn’t know I needed in my life right now. I was skeptical about the return of American Idol because it hadn’t been off the air for that long, but it’s so much better than it ever was before. Katy, Lionel Ritchie, and Luke Bryan make a pretty good team. Because they’re genuinely good people. There’s no more “Simon Cowell” who basically hates on every audition he sees. Instead, the judges offer encouragement.

Katy’s new album, Witness, is really good too. I don’t have the whole thing yet, but what I’ve had I’ve had on repeat for days. Katy’s music is positive, but not as in-your-face with positivity as Rachel Platten. It’s quite refreshing.
