On a recent episode of his podcast 10% Happier, Dan Harris interviewed his ABC News colleague Matt Gutman, who wrote a book about the soccer team trapped in a cave in Thailand.
The reporting and book writing process was interesting to hear about, but what made it one of my favorite episodes of the podcast was the fact that both Dan and Matt have to deal with the annoying voice in their head that says “Don’t mess up!”
Because that’s also something that I have to deal with. My own perfectionism gets in the way of a lot of things. I wish I could get rid of it.
The interview reminded me that my favorite journalists are, in fact, human beings. Not perfect robots who can do everything right on the first try. And it also told me that my anxiety is something I can manage if I should still choose to go into journalism.
I wish I could sit down with Dan and Matt and pick their brains about journalism, work ethic, and how they manage their anxiety and/or perfectionism. If I play my cards right, I might be able to someday.
